Requirements for Practicing TCM in B.C., Canada
In accordance with CTCMA policy
and Schedule E of the CTCMA Bylaws, starting from September 1, 2002,
anyone who enrolls in a TCM school in the province of British Columbia,
Canada must have a minimum of two years of accredited post-secondary
academic education or equivalent. The Bylaw does not apply to existing
students and transfer students who are not entering as first-year
students. The prerequisite of two years post-secondary education
is defined as a minimum of 60 credits, 390 academic hours each year
for two years (total of 780 hours) in an academic program of a post-secondary
institution that is university-level or equilavent. For the credits
to be accepted, they must be transferable to an academic program
in a formal Canadian university (see below for more info).
Laboratory, work hours or practicum hours are not counted. Vocational
credit proven by certificate is generally not acceptable, especially
when courses have a large component of field work. However, the
classroom hours in a certificate program may be counted.
Students who do not have two years post-secondary education do
not qualify to challenge the licensing exams required in order
to practice in British Columbia and cannot practice acupuncture
in the intern clinic.
Education Equivalency
T o evaluate the university transferability of courses and credits
for graduates and students from:
- British Columbia: Please refer
to the B.C. Transfer Guide.
- Québec: Québec
Ministry of Education issues a transcript confirming Diplôme
d'études collégiales (DEC). For university admission,
these students are normally granted 30 credits of advanced standing,
reducing a 120-credit requirement to 90 credits or 6 semesters.
Some degrees require additional semesters for completion. The
Québec Ministry of Education transcript is preferable
to the CEGEP transcript. The CEGEP DES (Diplôme d'études
secondaires) is not the same as the DEC.
- Outside B.C. but inside North America
(Canada & U.S.): Please refer to the book "Accredited
Institutions of Postsecondary Education" available in most
public libraries.
- Outside North America (excluding China):
Please refer to the credential evaluation report. A basic report
may be requested from the International
Credential Evaluation Service (ICES).
- China: Please refer to the Higher
Education Qualification Certificate awarded by the Chinese Ministry
of Education (www.chsi.com.cn
or www.chsi.cn)
If you have further questions, please contact the B.C. regulating
body, CTCMA. |
