How Acupuncture Works

Highly recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical procedure (over 5,000 years) that involves the insertion and manipulation of sterilized stainless-steel needles in the body. It was developed with the theory that there are special meridian
points on the body connected to the internal organs and that vital energy flows along the meridian lines. Illness occurs when the cycle of this energy, Qi, is blocked, deficient, or excessive. Stimulating meridian points and energy channels (Qi) along the meridian lines helps to
unblock the stagnation, redirect and balance the flow of Qi. It does not use any chemicals and does not have any side effects. Modern research has shown that the body’s immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, metabolism and microorganisms are affected, regulated, and improved by acupuncture treatment.

Traditional Chinese medicine also uses "moxibustion" (burning of mugwort herb) as a supplemental treatment during an acupuncture session. It is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and Qi and maintains general health. If Moxibustion is used, the mugwort will smolder, conducting heat through the needle to the tissue surrounding the needle in the patient’s body. After the desired effect is achieved, the moxa (mugwort herb) is extinguished and the needle is removed.

What ailments is it used for?

Acupuncture regulates Qi (spiritual, emotional, mental and the physical aspects of life), nourishes the organs and tissues and benefits the spirit by calming the mind. It can be used to help, prevent, and treat almost any condition:
  1. Improve body’s immune function and energy level.
  2. Rebalance the body – good to do at each seasonal change to prevent illness.
  3. Pain and pain disorders (balances endorphins) – arthritis, back pain, etc.
  4. Neurological and musulo-skeletal disorders – paralysis, numbness, lack of co-ordination, insomnia, sciatica, MS, etc.
  5. Addictions.
  6. Allergies and hay fever.
  7. Blood disorders.
  8. Cardiovascular disorders, high blood pressure, etc.
